The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in Karnataka has announced a student-friendly initiative to introduce digital paperless exam on a pilot basis. This initiative aims to transform the examination process for select programs, starting with Physiotherapy and Fellowship programs in the upcoming exams scheduled for March 2024.
In a student-friendly move, the university is trying out a digital paperless Exam for around 2,000 Physiotherapy and Fellowship program students next month. Instead of paper, they’ll use special tablets for the exams. If this pilot goes well, they’ll expand it to other courses like MBBS.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Dr. M.K. Ramesh, students will write their answers on the tablet using a pen, and their answers will be uploaded right after the exam to prevent cheating. He clarified that the questions will stay the same.
The main concern is whether students will find it easy to use the pen on the tablet. Dr. Ramesh mentioned that similar changes faced resistance before but are now accepted in other states and by the National Medical Commission, helping to stop cheating.
There are tablets available for around Rs 8,000-Rs 10,000, designed specifically for exams and will last for four years, saving the university from spending Rs 7-8 crore on paper answer scripts.
Additionally, the university is setting up skill labs in six districts where students can learn through simulations. These labs in Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Davangere, Kalaburagi, and Hubballi will train super-specialty nursing students, following a successful implementation at BMCRI a few years ago.
The university is also planning to open two new colleges focused on allied health sciences, offering 18 courses like optometry and perfusion technology.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Traditional answer scripts will be replaced with tablets specially designed for examinations.
- Students will answer the questions directly on the tablet using a pen.
- Once the exam is completed, their answers will be uploaded to a secure server immediately.
- This digital format aims to enhance efficiency and eliminate the possibility of malpractices associated with traditional paper-based exams.
Benefits of Digital Paperless Exam:
- Increased Efficiency: The digital format streamlines the examination process, saving time and resources involved in handling paper answer sheets.
- Reduced Malpractice: The immediate upload of answers to a secure server minimizes the risk of tampering or other forms of exam malpractice.
- Environmental Sustainability: Eliminating paper usage contributes to environmental conservation efforts.
